Bradwell on Sea is a place and a municipality with approximately 900 inhabitants in the east of the Dengie Peninsula in the county of Essex in south-east England .
Location and climate
The place Bradwell on Sea (or just Bradwell) is located at the mouth of the Blackwater River in the English Channel at a height of about 15 m . The city of Chelmsford is about 40 km to the west. The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 600 mm / year) falls over the year.
economy
The Bradwell area is predominantly agricultural. At the mouth of the Blackwater River, the Bradwell nuclear power plant , consisting of 2 blocks, was built in 1962 , and decommissioning and demolition began in 2002.
history
About 3 km to the east, the Romans built the Othona fort ; from its remains, a monastery with one of the oldest preserved churches in England ( St. Peter-on-the-Wall ) was built under the direction of Bishop Cedd († 664) around the middle of the 7th century . During the Second World War , the RAF Bradwell Bay airfield was put into operation north of the town .
Attractions
- St Thomas' Church , which is enclosed by the former cemetery , was built in the 14th century, but its current state essentially dates from the early 18th century.
