The Dengie Peninsula is a peninsula in the east of the English county of Essex , named after the place Dengie and bordered by the rivers Crouch (in the south) and Blackwater (in the north) ; to the east is the North Sea . Administratively, the peninsula belongs to the District of Maldon .

The Dengie Peninsula originally consisted largely of swampy alluvial land and marshland ; this has been gradually drained and settled since ancient times (see Fort Othona ) and in the Middle Ages by digging canals. Today the area is only about 5 to 25  m high - apart from a few remains of forest - mostly covered by meadows and pastures ; Fields are rare because of the sandy soils, but a vineyard was created at the beginning of the 21st century . The uninhabited eastern coastal strip of the peninsula encompassing an area of ​​over 30 km² is designated as a nature reserve (Dengie Natural Reserve) .

There are several medium-sized to smaller towns on the generally sparsely populated Dengie Peninsula - the largest and most famous is the district capital Maldon (approx. 14,500 inhabitants), followed by Burnham-on-Crouch (approx. 7,500 inhabitants), Maylandsea and Southminster ( 4,300 residents each), St Lawrence (1,350 residents), Latchingdon and Purleigh (1,250 residents each), Althorne (1,150 residents), Tillingham (1,050 residents) and Bradwell on Sea (850 residents each) Residents); the eponymous place Dengie itself has only about 120 inhabitants.

Attractions

The Anglo-Saxon Church of St. Peter-on-the-Wall is the most important testimony from the early Middle Ages. The places mentioned have church buildings from the 15th to 19th centuries. Also worth seeing is the “ruin” of the Bradwell on Sea nuclear power plant, which was in operation from 1962 to 2002 .
