Southminster is a small town with about 4,500 inhabitants and an administrative unit ( Civil parish ) in the District of Maldon in the east of Essex in south-east England .
Location and climate
Southminster lies at a height of approx. 20 m in the center of the Dengie Peninsula and is approx. 32 km in a south-easterly direction from Chelmsford . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 600 mm / year) falls over the year.
economy
The area of the Dengie Peninsula is traditionally agricultural, with cattle breeding playing a dominant role. In addition, hiking tourism has increased in importance.
history
Southminster was mentioned as Sudmunstra in the Domesday Book in 1086 . In 1889 the place was connected to the English railway network via the Crouch Valley line .
Attractions
- The single nave St Leonard's Church was built in the 12th century; some Roman bricks from the Roman fort Othona about 15 km northeast were reused in the construction. In the 15th century the church, however, largely took its present form - the nave (nave) was increased, renewed the windows and a late Gothic portal (porch) added on the north side; also has been bell tower (bell tower) by a multi-stepped buttresses (buttress) secured. In the early 20th century were apse (apse) and transept (transept) demolished and redesigned.
