The fire-Wida ( Euplectes nigroventris ) counts within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of fire Weber ( Euplectes ).

features

The small, short-tailed Brand-Wida is 10 cm tall and 21-14 g in weight. The male is in a splendid black dress with a red top of the head and a red neck, but without a collar, in a plain dress like females and young animals with an ocher-brown coloration, dark stripes on the back, light gray belly and light yellow-brown stripes over the eyes, very similar to the oryx weaver in a simple dress, but slightly smaller.

distribution and habitat

Brand-Widas live along the coast in southeastern Kenya , in Mozambique and Tanzania as well as on Zanzibar and Pemba in grasslands and arable land up to 1000 m altitude.

nutrition

Brand widas feed mainly on grass seeds, in particular barn millet ( Echinochloa haploclada ) and guinea grass ( Megathyrsus maximus ), rice and sorghum .

Reproduction

The breeding season in Kenya is between May and October, in Zanzibar between May and July and possibly again between November and December, in Tanzania throughout the year.

Hazardous situation

The Brand-Wida is not considered to be endangered ( least concern ).
