The Brandenburger Strasse (colloquially Avenue or Broadway ) is a pedestrian zone in Potsdam . It runs over a length of 750 meters from the Peter and Paul Church on Bassinplatz to the Brandenburg Gate on Luisenplatz .

History and description

Brandenburger Strasse was built during the second city expansion under Friedrich Wilhelm I. It was mostly built with five-axis type houses and inhabited by craftsmen who had to accommodate soldiers of the Prussian army . Depending on the size of the houses, four to six soldiers had to be taken in.

In the late 19th century it changed from a residential to a commercial street. At the beginning of the 20th century, today's Karstadt department store opened with its atrium, which is well worth seeing. During the GDR period, it was renamed "Klement-Gottwald-Straße" after the Czechoslovak Communist Party leader and turned into a pedestrian zone.

The renovation of the historical type houses could only be completed after the fall of the Wall , when Brandenburger Strasse got its old name back. It is popularly called Boulevard or Broadway to this day . Numerous shops, restaurants and cafes in the 750 meter long pedestrian zone invite you to linger. Every year during Advent, the Potsdam Christmas market takes place in the decorated street.
