The Bratwursthaus (formerly Bratwursthäuschen ) is a traditional snack bar in downtown Bochum . It is located in the center of the so-called Bermuda3eck next to the Friedrich-Lueg-Haus near the Engelbert fountain . The currywurst offered there is one of the culinary attractions of the Ruhr area city.

The snack stand was founded in 1952 by the Bochum butcher's Dönninghaus , which sold some of its products in this way. In 1981 the place became the property of Lore Schoettler. However, Dönninghaus remained the sausage supplier and still is today. In the course of various renovation and expansion measures, especially in 2002 and 2010, the originally small, wood-paneled sales van gave way to a wooden house that was more than twice as large. For decades, the snack bar only offered fried sausages and curry sausages. French fries and other dishes have also been available since 2010 .

Since 2006, the products from the Bratwursthaus have also been offered on the official homepage for Germany-wide shipping. A distribution in Switzerland and the Bratwursthaus shop in Bessemerstr. 85 are now also an integral part.

reception

The Bratwursthaus gained national fame primarily through the song Currywurst by the musician Herbert Grönemeyer, who grew up in Bochum . The text is by Diether Krebs , the music by Jürgen Triebel . Although the Bratwursthaus is not explicitly mentioned in the song, the artists stated several times that they were inspired to the song by regularly eating currywursts together at the Bratwursthaus during their time together at the nearby Bochum theater . In 2004 a video for the song, produced by WDR , was shot in front of the bridal sausage house . In April 2011, Grönemeyer once again stated that the best currywurst was "next to the Union Filmtheater in Bochum."

The snack bar has been an integral part of travel guides about the Ruhr area in general and Bochum in particular for years and is regularly mentioned and shown in media reports and TV reports.
