The Brauhaus Im Roten Ochsen is a traditional brewery style restaurant in the southern old town of Cologne , which looks back on a brewery and pub tradition at the same location since 1798 .

history

In 1798, the Im Roten Ochsen brewery was shown in the list of Cologne breweries under its last real brewer, Johann Georg Vogel. At this time Napoleon Bonaparte introduced freedom of trade in the Département de la Roer (to which Cologne also belonged) . Josef Much took over the business from 1838 until his death in 1849; afterwards his widow Lucia Much became the heir and head of the house until 1852. With Franz Schnitzler (from 1863 to 1867), Hubert Strauss, Balthasar Reinold (until 1874) and his widow (until 1875), the next changes of ownership followed. After that, Peter Wilhelm Basten (until 1880) and then his son Peter Michael (until 1883) continued the brewing business. Mathias Baum and his son Peter owned the brewery - which they now called " Em Ruhde Ooß " (" In the red ox ") in Cologne dialect - until 1913; then the brewery was passed on to the brewer Wilhelm Creischer. In 1916 the in-house brewing business was discontinued and the traditional house continued to operate as a restaurant from that time on.

After the building was destroyed in World War II , the restaurant was rebuilt in the 1960s and continued as the “ Brauhaus Im Roten Ochsen ”; today it is one of Cologne's old breweries.

gastronomy

The brewery offers mainly fresh dishes of the regional Rhenish cuisine as well as various international specialties; in particular, Kölsch on tap from the private brewery Heinrich Reissdorf is drunk.

Live music

For more than ten years there has been live music in the Red Ochsen on November 11th and on Carnival Day. Traditionally, the Cologne band Vino Rosso plays “Kölsche Musik” from well-known local music groups such as Bläck Fööss , Höhner , Paveier , Brings , Kasalla , Cat Ballou and others on these days in front of more than 200 guests .

Since October 2015, live music performances have been taking place at irregular intervals under the heading “Brauhauskonzerte im Roten Ochsen”. A wide musical spectrum is offered. The band “Livingnextdoor” (Lyric Pop) from Odenthal gave the first concert in this series. On November 11th, 2015 the carnival session was opened with “Vino Rosso” (Cologne music). In December there was a “Kölsch Sing-Along Concert” by the formation “Sing noch eine met”. The Vino Rosso Altweiberfastnachts concert on February 4, 2016 took place in a sold out house. From March to July it continued with “Alternative Rock” from “The Soundtrapped” from Leichlingen, the “Good old Shadows” (Shadows Cover) from the Bergisches Land and “Indy Günni & the Björns” (R&B) from Cologne.
