The Pfaffenhofen brewery was a brewery in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm . The beers were marketed under the name Urbanus from 1968 to 2018 .

history

The origin of the Pfaffenhofen brewery goes back to the "Wohlherrn-Bräu" on Pfaffenhofener Hauptplatz, which was first mentioned in 1612 . In 1790 the Freising master brewer Franz Xaver Urban acquired the “Bortenschlager Brewery” not far from it, which he handed over to his daughter in 1804; his son Sebastian took over the aforementioned "Wohlherrn-Bräu" in 1815. These two companies merged in 1922 with the "Kramer-Bräu" and the "Pfaffel-Bräu" to form the Pfaffenhofen brewery. Most recently, around 25,000 hectoliters of beer were produced each year.

The joint venture was - with the exception of the former Pfaffel-Bräu owners - owned by the founding families until the end, the main shareholders being the Urban family. Besides the Müllerbräu , Urbanus was the last remaining brewery in Pfaffenhofen at the time of the closure; In 1740 there were still eleven breweries.

The brewery was closed at the end of 2018. The trademark rights are transferred to the Toerring Group. Since then, the beers have been brewed in the Hofbrauhaus Freising, which is also part of the Toerring Group .

Cellar wheat

After years of trials, the Pfaffenhofen brewery succeeded in brewing a wheat beer in 2003 using champagne yeast. Until then, this type of alcoholic fermentation was only possible in the production of wine , sparkling wine and champagne . The Austrian "beer pope" Conrad Seidl considers the patented cellar wheat to be "one of the few real innovations on the German beer market" .

Others
