The Sarracenia rubra ( Sarracenia rubra ) is a species in the genus of the hose plants . It was described for the first time in 1788 by Thomas Walter .

description

The brown-red pitcher plant is the smallest upright growing Sarracenia species. The tubes of this type are 30 to 40 cm (rarely up to 45 cm) long. This species has many subspecies and is also very variable here (e.g. the very rare Sarracenia rubra subsp. Jonesii forms the largest of this species with 60 to 70 cm high tubes). There are also clear differences in shape and color. The hoses themselves die in the first (light) frosts in their home area. The tube opening of the Sarracenia rubra subsp. rubra reaches a width of 1.5 to 2.3 cm. Sarracenia rubra blooms from April to May - in cooler regions also until June. The flowers of this species are generally deep red. The flower has a diameter of about 3 to 4 cm.

distribution

The range of this plant is strongly disjoint (fragmented). The species occurs on the American east coast - from southern North Carolina to South Carolina to northern Georgia . The subspecies Sarracenia rubra subsp. jonesii and Sarracenia rubra subsp. alabamensis are rare. The subspecies Sarracenia rubra subsp. wherryi is more common again, it can be found from southeast Georgia via Alabama to northwest Florida and occasionally in Mississippi . The usual locations are slightly acidic wetlands, spring moors and sandy-swampy spots on the Atlantic .

Systematics

There are up to five subspecies:

  • Sarracenia rubra subsp. alabamensis D.E. Schnell : Some authors also regard it as a species of its own: Sarracenia alabamensis Case & RB Case . It occurs in Alabama.
  • Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis D.E. Schnell : It occurs in Florida.
  • Sarracenia rubra subsp. jonesii (Wherry) Wherry : It occurs in North Carolina and South Carolina.
  • Sarracenia rubra subsp. rubra : It occurs in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
  • Sarracenia rubra subsp. wherryi D.E. Fast : Some authors also put it as a subspecies of Sarracenia alabamensis : Sarracenia alabamensis Case & RB Case subsp. wherryi (DE Schnell) Case & RB Case .
