Break the Science Barrier ( English for: Break through the science wall (as in "sound barrier")) is a British television documentary by Richard Dawkins , which was published in 1996. Dawkins also leads the film as an interviewer and narrator. He advocates placing a stronger focus on scientific training and viewing science as a mental stimulus. The first trip takes him to the southern United States , the so-called Deep South . There a majority rejects Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and takes an opinion that is more that of theYoung Earth Creationist Equals. Dawkins mentions the Alabama Insert , an Alabama state regulation that issued a warning in biology textbooks that read: The theory of evolution is controversial and only supported by a few scientists. No one was present when life came into being on earth, so anything related to the origin of life must be viewed as theory, not fact. Dawkins shows former Alabama Governor Fob James mimicking the walk of a prehistoric man at a 1995 meeting of the Alabama State Board of Education to make fun of the prevailing doctrine of science. Fob James also said that whoever wanted to know where man came from should read the first book of the Bible called Genesis . Dawkins protests against this and replies that every serious scientist supports the theory of evolution.

Dawkins also emphasizes that as a Briton you shouldn't make fun of American “cousins” in general. There are ignoramuses in Great Britain too. A British scientist tells Dawkins that some of his students don't even know the basic science, such as: B. the connection between the orbit that turns the earth around the sons and day and night. He then interviews the British astronomer Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell , who discovered the neutron star together with Antony Hewish and Martin Ryle . This revolutionized our idea of the universe . Dawkins speaks of a true anti-scientific movement. Expressions of this attitude are z. B. the boom of astrologers and miracle healers. This was followed by a conversation with Sir Alec John Jeffreys , who discovered the genetic fingerprint . Then Dawkins demonstrates the importance of science for a better life and visits a British man wrongly convicted of murder. A scientific report on the DNA at the crime scene finally saved him and won him an acquittal. Dawkins meets with his friend, British writer Douglas Adams , made famous for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . This describes his passion for science. At the end of the film, Dawkins visits a school class and shows them the age of the earth.
