When French troops at their withdrawal, the fortress in 1745 dragged , the then so-called remained only from the original four gates Porte Saint-Martin received that served as a representative entrance to the city. The gate was later given the name Breisacher Tor , as it began traffic on the southern arterial road towards Breisach and Basel . Marie Antoinette , the youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz I of Austria in 1770, entered the city on her bridal procession to the French court through the Breisacher Tor.

The originally two-storey building was raised by a third storey in the second half of the 19th century, with the slightly protruding central projection getting a triangular gable . The building was then used as a school. When Gartenstrasse was redesigned in 1903, the east wing was torn down, where the floor plan is still marked in the pavement today.

use

The Breisacher Tor was badly damaged in World War II and restored in 1950/51 in the shape of the late 19th century. It was initially used as an office building for an insurance company; then until 2007 offices of the city of Freiburg were housed there. In 1989 the space behind the building was upgraded with trees and a brook . After the subsequent sale to private customers, the entire building was renovated. While the University of Freiburg has rented the premises on the upper floors and holds seminars and lectures there, there is a restaurant on the ground floor of the central gate building, which uses the area behind the building - the former driveway - for outdoor catering.
