history

Breitenhain celebrated its 800th anniversary in September 2009. However, it was only mentioned in a loan book in 1350. Breitenhain was laid out as a street village by Franconian settlers, with typical four-sided courtyards in half-timbered construction. In addition to agriculture - under not particularly favorable conditions - fish farming was carried out in many ponds. There was a church from the late Middle Ages, the current one dates from 1746. The estate was an ancestral home of the von Minckwitz family .

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality Strößwitz was incorporated.

The place has many half-timbered buildings and is free of any industrial settlements, the surrounding area was spared from serious interventions in nature. In 1990 the municipal administration, the local history association and the agricultural cooperative, together with the neighboring village of Stanau, decided to create the area into the exemplary Breitenhain ecoregion . The aim of the overall concept was the unity of a natural lifestyle and environmentally friendly development. In 1996, Breitenhain was able to win a prize for its commitment to this project, which was presented by the German Federal Environment Foundation and the German Institute for Urban Studies .

On June 16, 1995 Neustadt an der Orla became the fulfilling municipality of Breitenhain. On December 1, 2010, Breitenhain was incorporated together with the Strößwitz district as a newly created district of Breitenhain-Strößwitz after Neustadt an der Orla.
