The broad-headed fly ( Eurychoromyia mallea ) is the only species of the genus Eurychoromyia in the subfamily of the broad-headed fly (Eurychoromyiinae). This subfamily has been part of the polisher family since 2010 , after having been run as an independent family under the name Eurychoromyiidae for almost a century. Only four specimens of the species Eurychoromyia mallea are known from a collection trip to Bolivia in 1903. Two of the type specimens are in the collection of the Natural History Museum in Vienna , the others in the Museum für Tierkunde Dresden .

features

The representatives of the species Eurychoromyia mallea are about five millimeters long, with the head having a width of 2.5 millimeters. The color of the flies is light brown. They have a number of other characteristics that are typical of these flies and justify classification as a separate family. In addition to the very broad head, this also includes the specific shape of the antennae as well as a clasp on the hip (precoxa) and some other very specific features. The systematic status of broad-headed flies is unclear; they are grouped together with other fly taxa due to common characteristics .

distribution

Nothing is known about the way of life of the broad-headed flies, as well as about the larval development. The only previously known site is at the foot of the Bolivian Andes near the village of Serampiuni .

Names

The name Eurychoromyia is derived from three ancient Greek words (eurys ευρυς - broad; choros χορος - field, land; myia μυια - fly), the literal translation is therefore " broad -field fly". The name Eurychoromyia probably came about because the name Eurycephalomyia (broad-headed fly) had already been assigned by Hendel himself, who first described it in 1907, for a genus from the family of ornamental flies (today it is regarded as a subgenus of Tetanops ). The species name malleus comes from Latin and means "hammer".
