Bremen fire

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bremen fire is a conflagration that destroyed large parts of Bremen's old town on September 11, 1041 . The outbreak of the fire goes back to an argument between two clerics and a subsequent arson . In those weeks two canons - both named Edo - competed for the office of provost . One of them was related to the then Archbishop of Hamburg and Bremen Adalbrand and, because of this, saw himself at an advantage in assigning posts. However, he was defeated and lit out of frustration and anger the church .

The number of victims of the fire is not recorded. However, it is known that in addition to the cathedral and the cathedral library, the monastery buildings and numerous other houses in the area were also victims of the flames. Curiously, the defeated Edo was later the master builder in the reconstruction of the cathedral.
