The ships of the Bremer Vulkan type "D" comprised several classes of ships and single ships built between 1969 and 1978 for various shipping companies . They were second generation container ships .

details

The design of the D-type container ships is based on previous container ships of the Bremer Vulkan (starting with the type "B" ship Weser Express of the Elbe Express class ). The group of ships of type "D" comprises several construction variants, the association of which is essentially determined by common basic data and structural features of the hull. The appearance of the individual versions, on the other hand, differs greatly from one another and can be distinguished as follows:

  • ACT 1 , ACT 2 , Australian Endeavor (the latter was launched as ACT 3 ) and the ACT 6 , which was built a little later, formed the basic version of the series.
  • The Melbourne Express of Norddeutscher Lloyd had a higher load capacity than the three ACT / ANL predecessors.
  • The exterior of the ships of the SL-18 class (of which two replicas were made in the United States) looked completely different due to the superstructure arranged in front , but was based on the same basic design.
  • ACT 3 , ACT 4 , ACT 5 and Australian Exporter were replicas of the early ACT ships with higher refrigerated container capacities and modified hold details . They had an electro-hydraulic ship crane on the forecastle . In 1987, several of the ACT ships called at the IHI shipyard in Yokohama , where the turbine system was replaced by a Sulzer 8RTA62 two-stroke diesel engine with an output of 17,100 hp. The ACT 3 later became the America Star and was the last ship with the traditional funnel mark of the Blue Star Line .
  • Zim Montreal and Zim Hong Kong - successor buildings for ZIM .
  • The Dart Canada was the only unit of the D-ships delivered from the outset as a motor ship .
