Brendel Anstey (born November 1887 in Keynsham , † December 9, 1933 in Wednesbury ) was an English football player . Before and after World War I, the goalkeeper played a total of 49 Football League games for Aston Villa and Leicester City .

Career

In October 1910, the Bristol Rovers , who play in the Southern League , sign Anstey from Hanham Athletic , a club from the local Bristol League , with whom he had previously won the Gloucestershire Intermediate Cup by beating Lodge Hill 5-0 . At Bristol, the goalkeeper position was occupied in the 1910/11 season by Peter Roney and E. Silvester and Anstey was therefore limited to assignments in the reserve team. As early as February 1911 he was given as part of the commitment of center forward Walter Jones to Aston Villa , which were among the top teams in the English top division , in 1909 Arthur Cartlidge was another goalkeeper from Bristol to Aston Villa.

After an injury to long-time goalkeeper Billy George , Anstey made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United back in March 1911 and impressed immediately, with Athletic News noted: “The shortage of Aston Villa's defeat was largely due to the great debut one new goalkeeper - Brendal Anstey ”. Anstey remained the goalkeeper until the end of the season and in the following weeks he won five games in six games, including against the championship rivals Manchester United . Despite a week of special training in Southport , Aston Villa lost the last game of the season 3-1 at Liverpool , which led Manchester United to top the table and win the championship with a 5-1 home win.

In the season 1911/12 the amateur player Dick Roose started as a regular goalkeeper, after his departure at the end of October 1911 Anstey was given preference again. At the end of the season, Albert Lindon and Leonard Richards also received probation opportunities, Anstey had played a total of 21 league and three cup appearances. With the commitment of the English national goalkeeper Sam Hardy in the summer of 1912, Anstey was limited to sporadic appearances for the next three seasons, and he was not actively involved in winning the FA Cup in 1913 .

After the cessation of game operations at the end of the 1914/15 season due to the First World War, Anstey also played in the war-related substitute competitions for FC Birmingham (1915/16, 3 games) and Lincoln City (1918, 1 game) as well as the Works team Belliss & Morcom . In early September 1919, after a total of 45 competitive appearances for Aston Villa, he was transferred to the second division Leicester City and moved directly to the team. After a total of seven missions, he lost his place in the team to previous goalkeeper Herbert Bown in October 1919 following a 4-0 home defeat against Huddersfield Town and left the club at the end of the season.

In July 1920 he was signed by Mid Rhondda , who played in the Welsh section of the Southern League . In 1921 he took over the Pub Park Inn in Wednesbury and was still the operator at the time of his death in December 1933.
