Brice Catherin (born October 16, 1981 in Brussels , Belgium ) is a French composer and cellist .

Career

Catherin studied cello at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Swiss Lausanne at Marc Jaermann , and graduated in the year of 2004. At the same time he studied composition at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva with Michael Jarrell , Luis Naón and Éric Daubresse . He received his diploma in 2005. The following year he studied with Roland Moser at the University of Music in Basel .

From 2005 Brice Catherin gave concerts as a cellist, composer and improviser in Europe, Japan, Russia, Iceland and Canada. He composed about 80 works for soloists and also for large ensembles, with a performance duration of ten minutes to ten hours. He commissioned other composers to write works for cello and ensembles for him, including Dror Feiler , Christian Rosset , Evis Sammoutis , Patricia Bosshard , Baudoin de Jaer , Abby Swidler , Jacques Demierre , Arash Yazdani and Ludovic Thirvaudey .

Catherin also worked with artists from various disciplines: dancers ( Foofwa d'Imobilité , Corina Pia , Judith Desse ), writers ( Karelle Ménine ), actors ( Delphine Rosay ), resigeurs ( David Bestue and Marc Vives , David OReilly (artist) ) and Illustrators ( Yuichi Yokoyama )

As an improviser, he is known for his concept of “improvisation laboratories”, which focuses on “forced” improvisations, such as “play an instrument you don't know”, “play a building”, “improvise music for a cartoon” or "Combine baroque music with free improvisation".
