The Brienzlig ( Coregonus albellus ) is a freshwater fish from the subfamily Coregoninae .

features

Like the other coregonine species, the Brienzlig has a herring-like body with numerous small, silvery round scales . In addition, as a member of the salmon-like order, it has an adipose fin . It does not get more than 26 centimeters long.

distribution

The coregonus albellus is Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in Switzerland endemic . But since it is abundant there and the lakes are very clean, it is listed on the IUCN Red List under “Least Concern” (not endangered).

Way of life and reproduction

The Brienzlig lives benthopelagically (ground-oriented in open water ) in the deep water of the two lakes. From a length of 12 cm it becomes sexually mature. In September the young hatch at a depth of over 30 to 100 m. It feeds primarily on zooplankton . The Brienzlig is also a good food fish, it is caught with the Hegene .
