Brightblack Morning Light (BBML) was a band from Northern California with guitarist Nathan Shineywater and pianist Rachael Hughes, both from Alabama . The group was one of the most famous of the "freak folk" scene. Their recordings received great acclaim, and they also hosted several smaller folk festivals ( Quiet Quiet Music Festival ) in Northern California.

The band didn't care about their commercial marketing and led a comparatively quiet and undemanding life in cars, tents and huts. She used solar energy when recording music. The two musicians have been described as "back-to-country idealists and activists," influenced by writers and activists such as Edward Abbey , Leonard Peltier , Henry David Thoreau , Allen Ginsberg , Carlos Castaneda , Ram Dass , and Hamza El Din .

history

In 2002 the band, then called Brightblack , recorded the album Ala.Cali.Tucky on Galaxia Records with songs they had already performed when they called themselves Rainywoof . The album was well received and praised for its vocal harmonies.

In 2005 Brightblack Morning Light played at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in England at the invitation of the Kentucky band Slint . In the same year the band signed with Matador Records and released their debut album of the same name, which sold equally well in Europe as in America. The New York Times rated it "extraordinary" and praised it for its "mesmerizing, hollowed-out groove .

In 2008, Matador released BBML's album Motion to Rejoin , which was recorded in New Mexico and received as much attention in the US as it did in Europe, where the Guardian named it one of the "Top 5 Alternative Albums of 2008". In 2009 toured the US and Europe several times. In 2012 the band released "Live Journal One Instrumentals (2006 & 2008)" on iTunes after they broke up .
