Broadus is a small town in the extreme southeast of the US state Montana and is located in Powder River County , of which it is the administrative seat . In 2003 the village had 446 inhabitants. The nearest major cities are Billings in the west (268 km) and Rapid City in the neighboring state of South Dakota (241 km) in the southeast, with which Broadus is connected by highways.

history

The place name goes back to the first settler family in this area, the Broaddus family . When the city was founded, the streets were made extra wide to enable horse-drawn carriages to turn around. To this day, the streets within the village are mostly wide.

On March 16 and 17, 1876, 56 km south of Broadus, the battle on the Powder River broke out between the US cavalry and outnumbered warriors of the Sioux and Cheyenne , which the Indians nevertheless won. This defeat was later to mark the first of three devastating defeats by the US Army in 1876 during the Indian Wars, which culminated in the defeat of George Armstrong Custer in the Battle of Little Bighorn .

The local economy is still one-sidedly agricultural . Not least because of this, Broadus is struggling with economic problems these days due to its isolated location and its outdated hard and soft infrastructure. So are z. B. the connection quality for mobile phones and the quality of cable TV continue to be poor. In addition, the available free living space is relatively limited. In addition, the village suffers from an aging population due to the ongoing rural exodus of young residents. As a result, Broadus was gradually losing even basic service providers . So there are z. B. in the village nowadays neither a plumber nor a car workshop .

tourism

Broadus could attract tourists, especially because of the relatively unspoilt natural areas in its surroundings, which would bring particularly great potential for hunting and fishing tourism. However, there is a lack of overnight accommodation for foreigners in Broadus, as there are hardly any motels or hotels, and the internationally popular Yellowstone National Park is also around 500 km southwest of the town in the neighboring state of Wyoming , so that the majority of well-off tourists continue to focus primarily on them much better developed region for tourism.

Culture and sights

In the village, the Powder River Historical Museum, dedicated to the pioneering days, is open to the public every year from the beginning of June to the end of September. Broadus hosts the Chokecherry Festival and Powder River County Fair each August .
