Brochymena quadripustulata is a Wanzenart from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae). In English the species is also called Rough Stink Bug , Bumpy Stink Bug and Four-humped Stink Bug .

features

The brown-gray or red-brown bugs are medium to large in size. The males reach body lengths of 12.5 to 16 millimeters, while the females measure between 14.5 and 18.5 millimeters. The bugs have an enlarged abdomen and are relatively flat. Their striped and dot-shaped pattern, which has small orange and black dots, forms an ideal camouflage when the bugs are on tree bark. Another characteristic of Brochymena quadripustulata is the blunt thorns on the sides of the pronotum . The legs are lightly banded. Characteristic of the species are the juga on the head , which extend beyond the tylus (frontal wedge) and enclose it. Another specialty is the shape and color of the opening of the stink gland.

distribution

The species occurs in the Nearctic . It is widespread in southern Canada as well as in the United States.

Way of life

Brochymena quadripustulata is a polyphagous type of bug. The bugs are often found on trees such as black walnut , apple , peach , ash-maple , locust , oak and various pines , but also on couch grass ( Elymus ), Baccharis , sham asteris ( Vernonia ) and elder ( Sambucus ). Occasionally they cause less damage to peaches and other crops. The bugs do not feed exclusively on plants, but also prey on butterfly caterpillars and leaf beetle larvae, many of which are considered pests . In contrast to the similar looking marbled stink bug ( Halyomorpha halys ) , the bug species is perceived as a beneficial insect.

The adult bugs are mostly found in the period April – May and August – September. The species overwinters as an imago.
