Christian Gottlieb Broeder
Christian Gottlieb Broeder (born February 2, 1745 in Harthau near Bischofswerda , † February 18, 1819 in Beuchte ) was a German pastor and author. He wrote several textbooks for teaching Latin .
Live and act
Nothing is known about Broeder's family origin. He attended the Kreuzschule in Dresden and studied theology at the University of Leipzig .
From 1771 Broeder worked as a preacher at the St. Johannis Church in Dessau . In 1782 he became pastor and in 1815 superintendent in Beuchte.
Broeder's contemporary importance is based on his textbooks for teaching Latin. His works on Latin grammar , which were published in several new editions, and his Latin-German dictionaries were widely used.
In the 19th century Broeder was valued as a "honored educational writer", whose textbooks "made his name, which, as Buttmann’s became a generic term, known in the broadest circles". The practical orientation of his works and the grammatical examples were emphasized. Broeder's textbooks had been the basis of Latin teaching in schools for almost half a century.
Today Broeder is honored as the author of a Latin grammar, which at the end of the 18th century superseded the grammars used in school lessons and was widely used in the first half of the 19th century.
