The Broken Beats is a Danish band that was formed in 2001 in Århus (now Aarhus ), Denmark .

history

The initiative to found the band initially came from the future singer Kim Munk. In Århus he found the basic cast, consisting of Munk as lead singer and guitarist, Maria T. Wachmann as bassist and singer, Nis Klougart as lead guitarist and supporting singer and Mads Tønder on drums. To date, the line-up has varied a number of times and ranged between 3 and 13 musicians. Initially only on tour as a small-scale pop-rock live band in Denmark, the band found their way into German stores in 2003 with the release of their album The Weather Beats the Rhythm, their first album release on the Hazelwood record label . On the record she gathered various guests from the bands Kool Ade Acid Test , Jerobeam and Mardi Gras.bb, who also publish on Hazelwood .

In Germany, too, it was the live performances that paved the way for record sales, not least through recommendations in magazines such as Musikexpress and Intro . Their enthusiasm for the unconventional performances of the Danes, still completely unknown in Germany, first made Broken Beats known to a scene audience. The small club concerts at low prices, at which the band performs in a familiar atmosphere with a few guests and sometimes even invites the audience to make music, continued to give the band its reputation as an insider tip.

Her second Hazelwood album Them Codes… Them Codes , which was released in 2005 - for the first time with Leif Sommermeyer (piano, keyboard, synthesizer) and Rick Heart ( pedal steel guitar ) - had, as expected, a small but solid base of buyers and curious people Reviewers who were happy about the addition of winds and the bolder piano interludes and attested that the five Danes had parallels to bands like Calexico or Beck . Nevertheless, the press continued to criticize the group, which in their opinion could not transfer the charisma of the highly acclaimed live concerts to the studio albums.

The band tried to iron out precisely this point of criticism despite various departures. In 2007, In The Ruin for the Perfect was published with a new line-up (Maria Wachmann went, Lise Blaase (vocals) and Line Hoeck (bass, vocals)), to which the scene magazines now attribute the bitter and honest quality of the live performances but also found recognition in the market.

On July 27, 2007, an advertisement for a "new piano player / keyboard player / programmer" appeared on the homepage, which raised questions about the future of Leif Sommermeyer and the remaining dates of the summer tour. Sommermeyer then left the band after Broken Beats' second appearance at the Roskilde Festival to devote himself to his studies. In the following appearances, Munk and Lise Blaase took turns on the synth. When Line Hoeck later had to travel home in the middle of the tour due to the onset of pregnancy problems, Munk took over almost all of the bass parts in addition to his guitar, playing guitar and bass alternately, almost simultaneously.

In 2009 the album You're Powerful, Beautiful and Extrodinary was released .

In 2010 the collaboration with the Munich label Kanoon Records was announced. The next album, All Those Beginnings, was released in 2013 on the Danish label Target Records ; The Broken Beats is not listed in the band catalog on Kanoon's website .
