Bronisław Bonawentura Markiewicz (born July 13, 1842 in Pruchnik , Galicia, † January 29, 1912 ) was a Polish priest and founder of the Congregation of St. Michael the Archangel .

Life

Bronisław studied theology and was ordained a priest on September 15, 1867 in Przemyśl . When the plague broke out in Przemyśl in 1872, he organized charity kitchens and rapid medical assistance. Recognizing the plight of the people, he worried about the cultural and economic problems and encouraged his parishioners to help themselves in the neighborhood. In Miejsce Piastowe (mother house of the Michaelites ) he built a hostel for abandoned and orphaned children in the rectory. In 1895 the first religious house was built, in which Father Markiewicz lived with some alumni .

In Italy he met Saint John Bosco and in Turin in 1887 he made his perpetual vows as the Salesian of Don Bosco .

The establishment of homes, schools and workshops and a youth orchestra reached a high level. The increasing number of orphans prompted Father Markiewicz to expand his home for young people. His brother, lawyer Władysław Markiewicz, wrote a statute of the “Society for Moderation and Labor”, which was submitted to the competent authorities for confirmation and also submitted to the Pope with a request for the establishment of a congregation.

In 1910, Father Markiewicz entrusted his work to the protection of the Holy Archangel Michael. On September 20, 1921 , the Congregation was confirmed by Cardinal Sapieha , Archbishop of Kraków . Papal recognition took place in 1966 .
