The area was long known as Peat's Ferry Crossing after Georg Peat, a European settler, was granted land in 1836 and set up a ferry service across the Hawkesbury River. The name Peat's Ferry Bridge , the bridge of the Pacific Highway across the river, is a reminder of this time. The railroad reached the area in 1877. The name Brooklyn was first mentioned in January 1884, when Peter and William Fagan registered a 30-acre piece of land under that name. The name is derived from the Dutch town of Breukelen . The railway bridge over the Hawkesbury River was completed in 1889.
