Browningia altissima is a species of the genus Browningia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet altissima means '(Latin altissimus) superlative of altus high, very high'.

description

Browningia altissima grows tree-shaped, forms a well-developed trunk and reaches heights of growth of 5 to 10 meters. The parallel ascending shoots are cylindrical. There are seven to eight ribs . The mostly single central spine is directed downwards and 2 to 6 centimeters long. The five to six radial spines have a length of 5 to 10 millimeters.

The greenish white flowers are 5 to 6 inches long. They are filled with crowded, wide scales. The green, juicy fruits are elongated.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Browningia altissima is common in the Peruvian regions of the Amazon and Cajamarca in the hot lowlands of the Río Marañón . It was first described as Gymnanthocereus altissimus in 1959 by Friedrich Ritter . Franz Buxbaum placed them in the genus Browningia in 1965 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
