Bruce Gilden (born October 16, 1946 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American reportage photographer . He was best known for his work on the residents of New York City. Gilden distinguishes himself from other street photographers in particular by his consistent use of flash and the short distance to his subject.

job

Gilden graduated from Pennsylvania State University and then attended classes at New York City's School of Visual Arts, but is essentially a self-taught photographer . With his first report, Coney Island , Gilden showed his fascination for strange characters and peculiarities. On the beach of Coney Island he especially photographed the people who stood out from the usual crowd, overweight or underweight people, as well as intimate moments of the beach visitors.

His special way of working is to wait for a motif with a camera and flash unit ready to hand, then to get close to the motif very quickly and to photograph it with the flash. Through the use of the flash, the subject stands out from the background with a high contrast.

In 2007, the documentary Misery Loves Company: The Life and Death of Bruce Gilden was released, which deals with the work and life of Bruce Gilden. His current report Detroit - A City in Trouble deals with the social hardship of the Detroit residents who are affected by the financial crisis.

Gilden has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1998, and in 2002 he became one of the few full members.

In his street photography work, Gilden uses Leica M cameras with wide-angle lenses and unleashed compact flashes. Gilden uses a digital medium format Leica for his portrait work.
