Bruce Riedel

Bruce Riedel (* 1953 in Queens , New York City ) is a US expert on the Middle and Far East. He was an American national with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), diplomat, and advisor to the US government.

He studied at Brown University and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then studied the history of diplomacy at Harvard University and received his Master of Arts degree in 1977.

From 1977 to 1990 he worked at the CIA on various assignments. From 1990 to 1991 he was deployed as deputy head of division in the CIA's task force for the Persian Gulf . As director of affairs in the Persian Gulf and South Asia, he served on the National Security Council (NSC) from 1991 to 1993 .

He served on the National Intelligence Council as a clerk for Middle East and South Asia affairs from 1993 to 1995. He then moved to the Department of Defense and served as Assistant Secretary to Ministers William Perry and William Cohen for Middle East and South Asia Affairs from 1995 to 1997.

At the NSC, he took on positions as advisor to the US President and Senior Director for Middle East and South Asia Affairs until 2001. He continued this role until 2002, albeit as Senior Director for Middle East and North Africa Affairs.

After retiring from government work, he moved to the Royal College of Defense Studies in London in 2002 and stayed there until 2003. From 2003 to 2006, he worked as a specialist at NATO in Brussels . In 2006 he left the CIA and went back to the Brookings Institution in the USA.

Riedel worked for three US presidents as a recognized expert in the Middle East and South Asia, handling specific assignments on issues relating to Pakistan and India . Problems in the Arab-Israeli area were also part of his area of ​​responsibility. He is one of the people who participated in the Wye River, Maryland and Camp David conferences on Israeli-Palestinian issues.

He is also an expert on questions of terrorism and how to combat it.
