The Buchanan River is a river in the Wheatbelt region in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia .

geography

The river has its source in the Yockrikine Range and flows west to Muggerraggin Rock . There it turns its course to the southwest and flows into the Arthur River at Piesseville north of Wagin .

The entire river valley consists of rolling hills that used to be overgrown with eucalyptus and casuarina forests. Most of this forest had to give way to agricultural use.

history

The river was named in 1835 by surveyor General John Septimus Roe after the Londoner Walter Buchanan , who was closely associated with the Swan River Colony .
