The Blackwood River is an approximately 380 kilometers long river in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia .

geography

It arises in the Darling Range from the confluence of the Arthur River and the Balgarup River , flows in a north-westerly direction to Cape Leeuwin and there flows into the Indian Ocean after it has passed the city of Augusta .

On the upper reaches, the river flows through agricultural areas, while the middle reaches mainly through forest. In the lower reaches there are agriculture and forests, but also more densely populated areas.

The Hardy Inlet , into which the Blackwood River flows, has a number of islands, including Molloy Island and Thomas Island . The confluence with the southern ocean near Augusta has closed and reopened several times over the past 100 years. The Duke Head on its west side can serve as a reference point for these changes.

history

The Blackwood River was discovered by Captain, later: Admiral Sir, James Stirling as the first European in 1827 and named after Henry Blackwood , under whom Stirling served for two years in his youth.

Historically, the river was very important in the first days of the Swan River Colony . In recent times he has made a name for himself in the conflict between the ecology of the Augusta Margaret River region and the land use strategy.
