Matthew Adams (born September 26, 1988 in Melbourne , Australia ) is an Australian wrestler who is currently under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and appears regularly on their weekly show Raw under the ring name Murphy . His greatest successes to date have been winning the NXT Tag Team Championship , the WWE Cruiserweight Championship and the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship . He is the first Australian to win the WWE wrestling title.

Wrestling career

In the early years of his career, Adams was active in wrestling leagues in his home country. In Australia he was known by the ring name Matt Silva. He won his first wrestling title on October 23, 2010 at Ballarat Pro Wrestling when he won the BPW Australian Championship . During his six year wrestling career in Australia, he also won the MCW Heavyweight Championship at Melbourne City Wrestling and the PCW State Championship at Professional Championship Wrestling .

NXT (2013-2018)

On March 17, 2013, Adams signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment and moved to the United States . There he became part of NXT , the WWE expansion league, and was given the new ring name Buddy Murphy. In August 2014 he formed a tag team with Wesley Blake .

On January 15, 2015, on NXT Recordings, he and Wesley Blake of the Lucha Dragons ( Kalisto and Sin Cara ) won the NXT Tag Team Championship . The show aired on TV 13 days later. Their ring names were shortened to Blake and Murphy in this context, the first names were omitted.

On May 20, 2015, at NXT Takeover: Unstoppable , Alexa Bliss joined the two and henceforth acted as their valet . On August 22, 2015, on NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, Blake and Murphy lost their Tag Team titles to the Vaudevillains ( Aiden English and Simon Gotch). In the May 18, 2016 issue of NXT, Alexa Bliss split from the team again. After several defeats, the actual tag team split , so that Blake and Murphy competed again as individual wrestlers. After a while, both got their old ring names back, so Adams rejoined Buddy Murphy.

WWE 205 Live (2018-2019)

On February 13, 2018, Buddy Murphy made his debut at WWE 205 Live , becoming part of the WWE Cruiserweight division . On October 6, 2018, the PPV WWE Super ShowDown took place in his hometown of Melbourne . There he was able to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship for the first time . He was able to successfully defend this for several months until he lost to Tony Nese at Wrestlemania 35 on April 7, 2019 and thus had to give up the title.

SmackDown (2019)

As part of the 2019 Superstar Shake-up , Murphy switched from 205 Live to SmackDown Live on April 16, 2019 .

Raw (2019-present)

As part of the WWE Draft , Murphy moved from SmackDown to Raw on October 14, 2019 . After a long feud with Aleister Black , which he clearly lost, he joined the group around Seth Rollins , who appeared as Monday Night Messiah and had already gathered the Authors of Pain around him. As a result, Murphy and Rollins won the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship from The Viking Raiders on January 20, 2020 . As of February 7, 2020, his ring name was shortened back to Murphy. After 42 days of reign as Tag Team Champions , he and Rollins lost the title to The Street Profits on March 2, 2020 .
