Bukovci is the largest village in the Markovci municipality and is located in northeastern Slovenia between Ptuj (German Pettau ) and the Croatian border towards Varaždin. The area is called "Pettauer Feld" (Slovenian Ptujskega polja ) and is characterized by fertile soils. The village was first mentioned in 1322 and today has less than 1000 inhabitants. The name of the place is derived from the Slovenian word for "beech" (Slovenian bukev for beech). Hence the German name Buchdorf (shortened from Buchendorf ). It is not clear whether the German designation was decisive for the Slovenian name or vice versa.

The village is divided into nine districts:

  • Zgorji Kunec (literally: head rabbit )
  • Center (= village of Bukovci)
  • Spodji Kunec (literally, sub rabbit )
  • Nuvi Jork
  • Kolamerce
  • Siget
  • Hujkarji
  • Vopošnica
  • Lünovci

history

The area belonged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg in the 13th century and was administered by the ministrals of the Lords of Pettau . 1322 is for the first time in the Salzburg land register of Prince-Bishop Friedrich III. von Leibnitz Buchdorf mentioned as a possession of the bishop. At that time 35 families lived in the village.

The area was plundered and depopulated by several Turkish invasions between 1472 and 1532, almost half of the population was killed.

In 1803 the area became part of the Duchy of Styria. When the communities in the Austrian Empire were formed in 1824, Bukovci became its own cadastral community in the Pettau district. It was not until 1937 that the municipality was dissolved and most of the area with the village of Bukovci was incorporated into the Markovci municipality.

After the First World War there were no more German-speaking residents in the community.

In the eastern part of the village there are 19th century farmhouses that are part of the national cultural heritage.
