The Association of Communists of Kosovo ( Albanian Lidhja Komuniste e Kosovës , LKK ; Serbian or Serbo-Croatian Savez komunista Kosova / Савез комуниста Косова , SKK / СКК) was a communist party in the province of Kosovo within the Yugoslav Republic of Serbia .
history
With the autonomy of Kosovo, the regional Communist Party of Kosovo was founded in 1944 . The party was incorporated into the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia (BdKJ) in 1952 and renamed the Union of Communists of Kosovo .
In the early 1990s, ethnic tensions between the countries of Yugoslavia brought the BdKJ to a collapse. The communists in Kosovo wanted to turn the country from an autonomous region in Serbia into the 7th Socialist Republic in Yugoslavia, with the same status as Croatia , Slovenia , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Montenegro , Macedonia and Serbia .
In September 1992 the Albanians in Kosovo declared themselves independent for the first time in a referendum ; however, only Albania recognized the Republic of Kosovo .
