Federal Institute for Grain, Potato and Fat Research

The Federal Institute for Grain, Potato and Fat Research (BAGKF) in Detmold in East Westphalia-Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia carried out research in the fields of grain, legume and potato processing and related sciences, food fats (with the exception of milk fats) and technical Fat and its raw materials. On January 1, 2004, the institute was absorbed by the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Food (BfEL). At the beginning of 2008, the facility was renamed and reorganized as the Max Rubner Institute , Federal Research Institute for Nutrition and Food (MRI).

history

The BAGKF was founded in Berlin in 1907 as a research institute for grain processing . The research institute of the Association of German Millers and the State Experimental Corn House merged with it.

In 1945, after the war ended, the laboratories in Berlin were dismantled by the Soviet occupying forces . Therefore their activities were relocated to Rahden / Westphalia and in 1947 to Detmold.

In 1957 the Research Institute for Grain Processing and the Research Institute for Starch Production were taken over from Berlin. In 1974/1975 the Berlin location was finally given up and subsequently served the Institute for Food Technology - Grain Technology of the TU Berlin .

In 1976, the institution was renamed “Federal Research Center for Grain and Potato Processing” following a restructuring into four institutes. This was changed in 1991 through the merger with the Federal Institute for Fat Research in Münster in the last name Federal Institute for Grain, Potato and Fat Research.

Others

An annual assessment of the German wheat and rye harvest was carried out as part of the special harvest and quality assessment (BEE). Successes in the field of human health can be attributed to the Federal Institute (see acrylamide ).
