Since the law of architects is a matter for the federal states, the chambers of architects exist at the state level. The professional tasks, the entry in the list of architects and the organizational structure of the chambers are accordingly regulated in the individual architectural laws of the federal states. The tasks of the chambers include: B. “to promote building culture , the art of building, the building industry , urban development and landscape management, ...”, but also tasks such as further training and representing the interests of the profession. The keeping of an (architects') office directory, which is now also part of the regular services of the regional chambers of architects, is not regulated by law.

The chambers are borne by the registered architects , interior designers , garden and landscape architects and town planners themselves. Only in the list of architects registered members of Chambers of Architects this job title or variations may lead them. The modalities of the admission of members to the chamber or the list of architects are also regulated by the architects' laws or a state-based registration and deletion ordinance.

The professional titles of architect, interior designer, urban planner or landscape architect may only be used by those who are compulsory members of the local chamber of architects responsible for their place of business. In this respect, the chambers of architects have the further task of promoting and monitoring the professional law of architects. Violations by architects against professional regulations can be punished by the professional courts of the architects' chambers.

The provincial chambers look after a total of more than 130,000 members and are headed by a total of 155 board members. The proportion of women among the members of the Chamber of Architects is around 34%, the proportion of women among the board members is 25.2%.

Representing the interests of the chambers of architects at the European level, the Architects Council of Europe , is the responsibility of the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects.

Federal Chamber of Architects

In contrast to the regional chambers, the Federal Chamber of Architects is not a public corporation, but a private association in which the 16 regional chambers of architects have come together. The purpose of the Federal Chamber of Architects (BAK) is to "bring forward the common interests of architects within the Federal Republic of Germany, at European and international level in accordance with the resolutions of the Federal Chamber Assembly and the Board of Directors" (Section 2 (1) of the BAK statutes). Barbara Ettinger-Brinckmann has been President of the Federal Chamber of Architects since 2013 .

From 1982 to 1999, the Federal Chamber of Architects was based in the Lippesches Landhaus in the Oberkassel district of Bonn , and since then it has been located on Askanischer Platz in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin .
