Burak Bektaş ( February 14, 1990 in Berlin - April 5, 2012 in Berlin-Neukölln ) was a Berliner with a migration background . For reasons that have not yet been clarified, he was shot dead by a middle-aged man who happened to be passing by. The perpetrator could not be caught. In November 2017, a memorial plaque was put up, supported by the Neukölln district, where the crime occurred. Since April 2018 a sculpture in Berlin commemorates the murder.

history

Burak's father came to Berlin from Turkey in the 1980s and met his Turkish wife here. Burak was born here; At the time of the crime, he was strolling through his district, while he happened to meet other migrants on the street in front of the Vivantes Klinikum Neukölln . The group of five young men got into conversation when a white man walked by, pulled out a pistol, and fired five aimed shots at the group without any argument or warning. Burak died in hospital, and two other group members were seriously injured.

The police investigations that began immediately after the incident and the involvement of the public yielded a lot of information, but did not lead to clarification. A right-wing extremist motive is suspected .

Because the investigation showed no progress for a long time, left activists founded the initiative to investigate the murder of Burak Bektaş . Together with the family, the initiative organizes a vigil at the crime scene and commemorative demonstrations every month .

After the Briton Luke Holland was gunned down again in Neukölln in 2015, this time in front of a club, the police arrested a suspect German. A connection with the murder of Bektaş could not be established - even by the temporarily investigating state security - although the course of the crime was very similar. And the police had found numerous indications of right-wing extremism in the suspect ; he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for the murder of Luke Holland.

On November 5, 2017, the initiative inaugurated a memorial plaque (coordinates: 52 ° 26 ′ 25.6 ″  N , 13 ° 27 ′ 32.4 ″  E ). On the 6th anniversary of his death on April 5, 2018, an “unmistakable monument” was erected near the crime scene on the green area on Rudower Strasse. In total, the monument is to cost around 25,000 euros, with partial financing from foundations and project funds. The memorial was inaugurated on April 8, 2018, and about a week later was damaged by an unknown perpetrator with a chemical.
