The ruin Bärenburg is the ruin of a spur castle west of Ramsbach, a district of Oppenau , in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg . It lies on a steeply sloping mountain ledge on the western edge of the valley of the Rench River at around 450 meters above sea ​​level .

history

The castle was built in the 12th century by the Counts of Freiburg and was first mentioned in 1307. Other owners were the Lords of Bärenbach and the Bishops of Strasbourg. After 1470 the castle fell into disrepair. Only 2 meter high wall remains of the former castle complex are left. The keep had a base area of ​​7.5 by 7.5 meters and a wall thickness of 1.7 to 2.2 meters.
