history

Bucherbach Castle, remains of the outer walls

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1326 in a contract of inheritance from the Counts of Saarbrücken-Commercy as maison dou val de cologne (German: House in the Köllertal ), when Count Johann I transferred the county of Saarbrücken to Archbishop Balduin von, with the exception of the Saarbrücken and Bucherbach castles Trier pledged. Count Philip I of Nassau-Saarbrücken designated Burgelebach Castle in 1412 as the widow's seat of his wife Elisabeth of Lorraine .

In a dispute with Duke Ludwig the Black of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , Johann II of Nassau-Saarbrücken placed the complex under the protection of Count Palatine Friedrich the Victorious in 1460 .

Under Philip II , the castle was extensively renovated in the middle of the 16th century, before it was devastated in 1627 in the Thirty Years' War by imperial troops under the leadership of Count Kratz von Scharfenstein . A reconstruction followed in 1645, but after the complex was burned down again, it was subsequently only leased as a manorial estate.

In 1740 the castle was described as dilapidated, all walls and towers were still standing, but without a roof . Prince Wilhelm Heinrich von Nassau-Saarbrücken left it as a quarry to the residents of the surrounding towns. During the French Revolution , the remaining buildings and lands were confiscated and leased as national property.

After the first renovation of the castle ruins had already taken place in 1930 , a thorough renovation followed in 1983/84 .

In 2011 the castle ruins were redeveloped again under the direction of the Burg Bucherbach eV interest group.

description

The castle is an approximately square complex with an inner side length of about 40 meters with four round corner towers with a diameter of about ten meters, all of which have been preserved at a considerable height except for the east tower ( fort type ). The structure of the building goes back essentially to the renovation in the 16th century, whereby the foundation walls of the 14th century were apparently used. During the renovation, the defensive character was lost, so three large window frames were broken out of the west tower in the middle floor and an arena was placed in front of the vineyard. Between the south and east towers there was a representative residential building with access to the castle via the trenches that are now buried .

Every year numerous festivals and markets (Christmas market, medieval market, wine festival, farmers market, concerts, etc.) take place in the castle area.
