Falkenstein Castle

The Falkenstein Castle , and Castle Rock Falkenstein called, is today the remains of a rock castle on a rock opposite the church in the small town of Falkenstein / Vogtl. in the Vogtlandkreis in Saxony .

history

Falkenstein Castle was built around 1200 by the bailiffs of Weida and Plauen . With the castles Treuen and Auerbach to the north-west and north as well as the castle Schöneck to the south, it was part of a chain of castles that was supposed to secure the cleared area of the Plauen rule to the east. The lordly Falkenstein Castle was given as a fief by the bailiffs to the Falkenstein family of the same name . In 1267 you are proven with Johannes von Falkenstein as followers of Heinrich I von Plauen. In the course of the Vogtland War , when the bailiffs of Weida, Gera and Plauen lost most of their property to Emperor Karl IV. And the Wettins , the Falkensteiners had to grant the Bohemian King Karl IV. The right to open their castle. At the end of the 14th century the castle became the property of the Wettins, at which time the Falkenstein family died out. During the first half of the 15th century, the Wettins enfeoffed the von Trützschler lords with the castle; they were also able to expand the town of Falkenstein ( Valkinstein ), which was developed in the 13th century to protect the castle . It was also the Trützschler who had the castle built at the foot of the castle, which stood in place of the former farmyard. The castle, which had already fallen into disrepair around 1528, was largely demolished in 1618 by Georg Abraham Trützschler.

description

The castle was located at the top on a rock, the summit of which was formed into a trapezoidal area by means of lining walls . On top of this is the stump of a square tower measuring eight by eight meters, which is now secured by a railing and serves as a viewing point. There was very little space available on the rocks for other buildings.
