Gleuel Castle

The Gleuel Castle In the district of the same name in the city of Hürth is one of the oldest moated castles in medieval Kölngau in the area around the city of Cologne .

history

In late Franconian times, in a document dated June 4, 898, the king of the Lotharingian part, Zwentibold , gave a Salhof in Gleuel (Gloulo) with 12 other Hufen and the church, as well as goods in Selstena (Sielsdorf) to the Essen monastery . This speaks for the old age of the castle courtyard and also for the church location. The castle and town came into the possession of the cathedral monastery in the mid-13th century . The feudal man Gerard von Gleuele fought with the Cologne residents against the archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden in 1260 . The mayor Heinrich von Gluwel signed the hereditary land association of the archbishopric as territorial lord in 1463 . In 1474, Göddert von Gleuel led the Cologne Sparks as Rittmeister in the subsequent Burgundian War . After the line died out in 1550, the Schall von Bell and 1630 Johann von Cölln from the Cologne councilor family became owners. He built today's two-wing complex from the original four-wing complex in 1632. A gable stone shows the date. In 1726 the estate came back to the cathedral chapter through inheritance. As a result, the estate came into civil hands through secularization during the French period in 1802, first in the hands of the later mayor of Hürth, Heinrich Felten (in office 1817–1845). In 1969 the municipality took over the property and opened the park to the public. But there was no use for the castle. Finally, the castle became an architect who she 1976/77 monument preservation was restored and converted outbuildings to a residential community. He lives there himself and also maintains his office and a small vintage car museum here . Therefore, the castle is usually not accessible. The host opens his house for the Erftkreis cycle concert series of the Hürther music seminar and other cultural events.

Building description

Main entrance to the castle courtyard

The two-winged and two-storey complex made of white brick with adjoining buildings, which are combined to form a horseshoe-shaped courtyard, which is closed by a gate with a bridge adorned by two marble lions and access to the main entrance, surrounded by moats of the Gleueler brook in a public park , belongs to the type of Rhenish angular construction. The six-axis main wing facing the street with a multi-curved stepped gable can be reached via a bridge to the gable entrance. The slightly higher four-axis hipped side wing is connected via a stair tower in the corner of the building.

Inside the main building, the Cologne ceiling in the knight's hall with the coats of arms of those of Cölln and those of Mülheim from 1685 is worth seeing. Today it is used occasionally for concerts that are held in turn in the mansions of the district. The library with its English sandstone fireplace from the beginning of the 18th century is also significant.
