The Gollenfels Castle is a rock castle on the "Gollenfels" above the Guldenbachtal at 285 m above sea level. NN on the edge of the Soonwald opposite the Stromburg in the district of Dörrebach near Stromberg in the Hunsrück in the Bad Kreuznach district .
history
According to tradition, Gollenfels Castle was built in 10/11. Century on the foundations of an old Roman fortress, which served to secure an army road from Mainz to Trier . However, there are no reliable sources for this claim. The location of the castle on the rock between the valleys of the Dörrebach and the Guldenbach, however, is of outstanding strategic importance, which is why this place was probably chosen by the builders.
The castle was first mentioned in 1156, another was dated April 5, 1191 and in 1450 Johann von Stein ( Steinkallenfels ) was mentioned as a resident.
In 1614, the castle was destroyed by Spanish troops on the orders of Emperor Matthias von Habsburg during the Jülich-Klevian succession dispute .
In 1619 a new castle was built on the Gollenfels and, despite a heavy battle against French troops, it was not destroyed in 1793. However, it then lost its strategic importance and was set up as a soldiers' quarters in 1848 and remained inhabited for a few years until after the Second World War .
investment
The castle complex consisted of a mighty residential tower with an attached two-story residential building and farm buildings on the back of the castle courtyard.
Today the dilapidated and no longer habitable castle is privately owned.
