The Castle Hofen is the ruins of a hilltop castle above the Neckar at about 240 meters above sea level in the district of Mayrhofen in the district Mulhouse the state capital Stuttgart . Access is via Wolfgangstrasse behind the St. Barbara church . It is the only ruin in the city of Stuttgart with the remains of the wall.
history
Around 1250, next to the village of Hofen, which was first mentioned in 1120, the castle was built by the Counts of Württemberg to secure the Neckar crossing ( ford ) and a trade route. Cuno von Mühlhausen is named as feudal lord.
After the last of the "von Hofen", Luithart IV., Died in 1369, the castle came into the possession of Count Eberhard II of Württemberg and in 1369 as a fief to the noblemen of Neuhausen. The barons of Neuhausen remained the owners of the castle until 1753. The castle was burned down during the Thirty Years War . In 1753 Joseph Athanasius returned the fiefdom to Baron von Neuhausen to Duke Karl Eugen von Württemberg.
In the 19th century, the castle ruins were partially demolished and in 1999 the city of Stuttgart bought and renovated them.
