The Burg Hohenstein on the Swabian Alb is the ruins of a hilltop castle on a to 785  m above sea level. NN lying hill near Oberstetten, a district of the community of Hohenstein in the Reutlingen district , named after it since 1975 , consisting of the formerly independent villages (today districts) Bernloch, Eglingen, Meidelstetten, Oberstetten and Ödenwaldstetten in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle was built by the Lords of Hohenstein at the end of the 11th century. The castle is first mentioned in the Zwiefalter Chronicle around 1100. The Hohensteiners were wealthy aristocrats in the High Middle Ages who administered and ruled from the castle, levied taxes and spoke justice. The supra-regional importance was also evident at the court festivals, in which the Margraves of Baden took part twice.

The castle was expanded around 1300, fell into disrepair after being destroyed in 1408 and was no longer inhabited by 1438. The Counts von Zollern and Kaib von Hohens are named as later owners .

Extensive securing work was carried out from 1983 to 1985.
