description

The moated castle was built in 1517 by Herbord von Dinklage near the Hopener Mühlenbach . The Lords of Dinklage sat at Gut Hopen until 1591, then from 1591 to 1793, the Lords of Haren . Hopen Castle passed to Friedrich Christian Oeynhausen zu Merrelsheim through partial inheritance and purchase . Gut Hopen came into the possession of the von Galen family through purchase in 1805 . In 1948 refugees were accommodated in the manor house, and in 1948 Count Korff, known as Schmiesing-Kerssenbrock , became the owner. From 1954, Wasserburg Hopen also served as a youth hostel for a while. It has been in private use again since 1964.

The moated castle Hopen is surrounded by a moat that was partially filled in and was dredged by Count Kerssenbrock and returned to its original state. The second floor of the castle, made of strong half-timbering, dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Century. Around 1780 the castle was almost doubled with a two-story half-timbered building. The former castle tower collapsed in 1825, the drawbridge was demolished in 1880 and the extension around 1900. Above the entrance door is a sandstone roof with the coat of arms of the von Haren and Löw von und zu Steinfurth families .

The painting Wasserburg Hopen bei Lohne was made in the 1970s by the painter Luzie Uptmoor (1899–1984) .

Hopen Castle used to have an estate with agriculture, forestry and pond management. The avenues that run through the Hopen castle forest were laid out from 1703 by the then owner Herbord von Haren.

Hopen Castle was extensively renovated in 2014 and was open to the public as part of a guided tour on September 6, 2015 to celebrate the renovation.
