Location and surroundings

Kostomlaty Castle is located southeast of the eponymous municipality Kostomlaty pod Milešovkou ( Kostenblatt ) on the top of a hilltop.

history

The castle was founded at the beginning of the 14th century by the Lords of Ossegg . In 1333 the castle and some villages passed to Chotěbor von Hirschstein as a fief . Emperor Charles IV - at the time still Margrave of Moravia - bought the castle in 1335.

In the following decades the facility changed hands several times. In 1370 Habart the elder of Žerotín was lord of the castle. His successors sold the castle to Heinrich Škopek von Dubá in 1388 . Albrecht Škopek of Dubá was able to hold the castle against the Hussites . In 1434 the castle was badly damaged during the siege by a Hussite army under Jakoubek z Vřesovic . Jakoubek z Vřesovic is mentioned as the keeper of the castle in 1435, he won the property dispute over the castle against the lords of Dubá and his descendants called themselves Kostomlater von Vřesovice.

At the beginning of the 17th century the castle was owned by Peter and Oldřich Kostenblatt von Vřesovice, but they no longer use it for residential purposes. In 1606 the castle was mentioned as uninhabited, although only two bastions had a roof. In the following decades the castle continued to deteriorate.

In 1841, the first maintenance work on the castle ruins took place. The lower courtyard was repaired and the keep was made accessible as a lookout tower. A restaurant for excursions was later set up in the castle courtyard. After the German population was expelled from Bohemia in 1945, the tourist facilities fell into disrepair. Only recently have maintenance measures been carried out again in the castle area. In addition to securing the walls, work is currently underway to make the keep accessible again.
