Löwenstein Castle

The Löwenstein Castle ( Slovak Vršatský hrad , Vršatecký hrad or simply Vršatec ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle above the village of Vršatské Podhradie , Illau district in the Trenčín Region , Slovakia .

history

Evidence of the Lusatian and Puchau culture can be found on the castle hill . The castle was built on the north-western border of Hungary in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion . The castle was able to control the Waagal valley due to its excellent location on a steep rock ridge .

At the end of the 13th century the castle became the property of Matthäus Csák , and in 1394 Stibor von Beckov acquired it . In 1577 the ownership of the castle passed to Franz Jakusitz, whose line died in the Thököly riots , whereupon the crown sold Löwenstein Castle to the Counts of Breuner.

In 1680 the castle, to which the insurgents had withdrawn, was destroyed by imperial troops on the orders of the German Emperor Leopold I. After the reconstruction, however, the castle burned down in 1707 during the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi , possibly the imperial troops deliberately destroyed the castle by setting fire to the powder store.

location

The ruin is located in the rocky landscape of Vršatské bradlá (Vršatsk Cliffs) in the White Carpathians . The core castle is on the highest part of the ridge. From the lower outer bailey , the upper inner bailey is accessible via a tunnel through the rock. You can continue hiking along the mountain ridge to Lednitz Castle (Lednica).
