The Castle Lüdinghausen is a moated castle in Lüdinghausen in Coesfeld . Together with the castles Vischering and Wolfsberg she is one of three castles on Lüdinghauser city.
history
The castle was built in the 12th century as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Lüdinghausen as the ministerial of the bishops of Münster and was converted into a typical Renaissance castle in the 16th century under Gottfried von Raesfeld . Today the castle is used by the adult education center , for exhibitions and council meetings. The large hall, richly decorated with coats of arms, offers space for concerts. The tower and the west wing date from the late 19th century.
Some building details also date from the 16th century: In the facade there is a list carved in stone with food prices from 1573/74, various coats of arms and an inscription about the town fire in 1569. The upper rooms of the castle combine building tradition with modern Elements and are partly equipped as conference rooms. The castle is now owned by the city of Lüdinghausen.
The climax of the witch hunts in Lüdinghausen seems to have been in 1624. Trials were carried out in the court house at the castle, where the defendants were questioned during "amicable" interrogation and under torture . In a wave of witch trials in a few months in 1624, at least 20 people were executed on suspicion of witchcraft , including Bernhard Schwarte and the Heidtmann couple from Haltern am See. The number of victims was probably higher as only part of the files have survived.
Modern history
As part of the Regionale 2016 , extensive changes and construction measures were carried out on the castle. The regional project "WasserBurgenWelt" was divided into three construction phases, in which the open space between the castles Lüdinghausen and Vischering , the two arms of the Stever and the old town , which had previously been used primarily for agriculture, was converted into a landscape area that could be used for local recreation. New hiking and biking trails and two bridges were created. Meadows of flowers were created and native trees were used.
