The former Lichtenberg Castle ( Slovene Grad Lihtenberk ) in the Kronland Carniola is now a ruined castle in the municipality of Šmartno pri Litiji ( German St. Martin bei Littai ) in the district of Dvor (Johannisthal in the Lower Carniola) , also known as Dvor pri Bogenšperku (Hof bei [Burg ] Wagensberg). The listed remains of the hilltop castle are hidden under trees and undergrowth. The Lichtenberg family from Carniola is named after this castle.

location

The ruins of the hilltop castle are located 200 meters to the north and below Wagensberg Castle (formerly Wagensperk , today Grad Bogenšperk ), which is now “one of the most beautiful castles” and “one of the most important cultural monuments” in Slovenia.

history

Lichtenberg describes a bare or cleared (cleared) mountain. The castle was mentioned in a document in 1250 as castrum Liechtemberch , 1288 as castrum Leytemberch , 1338 as Pilgrimum de Liechtenberch and between 1393 and 1396 as Lyechtenberg . When the construction of Wagensberg Castle began in the 15th century, the building fell into disrepair. Heavy destruction caused the Idria - Earthquake on March 26, 1511th

In the 1630s, the merchant Jurij Kheysell from Laibach bought the two castles and used Lichtenberg as a quarry for the larger castle. One of the next owners, the polymath Johann Weichard von Valvasor (1641–1693) , did the same .
