The Longuich Castle , also known as the Old Castle , is a castle house on Maximinstrasse, corner of Burgstrasse in Longuich in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate .
history
The local castle was built by Knight Platt von Longuich as a residential castle and was mentioned in 1360 as a fief of the Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin . After the castle was dilapidated in the 15th century, Platt von Longuich received permission from Archbishop and Elector Johann II of Trier to fortify the house and equipped it with bay windows and a surrounding area in the late Gothic style. The house was inherited by the gentlemen von Bentzerath, von Geispitzheim, von Laudolph, Merl von Retenich and others. In 1666 the castle was divided due to disputes between the owners before the knight's court and in 1696 Abbot Alexander granted Adam von Retenich the right to press .
After the Abbey of Sankt Maximin bought the Old Castle at the end of the 18th century , the third floor was demolished in 1790 and a gable roof was added, giving it its current appearance. Since the secularization of 1803, after being sold to the Mertes family in 1812, one half of the castle house was used for agriculture and converted into a 19th century house. The west side is owned by the Schlöder family. It was initially used as an oil mill . Overall, the west side still has the original room layout from 1496 and was restored in various steps from 1983. Today the castle is used gastronomically on the east side, while the west side houses a winery.
investment
The late Gothic old castle is a rare testimony to medieval aristocratic self-fortifications in rural areas. The historical quality and the artistic design of the late Gothic rooms as well as the late Gothic outer facade were preserved during the subsequent renovations. After the secularization, the old castle was acquired by two families.
