The remains of the medieval Montaigle castle are near Falaën, a district of the Belgian municipality of Onhaye in the Walloon province of Namur . Where the Flavion stream flows into the Molignée , a tributary of the Meuse , the castle ruins jut out into the sky on a craggy ledge and thus belong to the type of spur castles .

history

At the current site of the ruins there was a small military garrison at the end of the Roman era from the 3rd to 5th centuries.

Montaigle Castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century on an older building by the Dampierre family . It was owned by the Counts of Namur , descended from Guy de Namur , youngest son Guys de Dampierre and once regent of the county of Flanders .

In the 15th century, Montaigle Castle was expanded into a residential castle with more storeys, large windows, chimneys and cellars. The complex, which can still be seen today, dates from that time. The castle was the central point of a bailiwick of the County of Namur and served as the seat of the last Countess of Namur, Jeanne d'Harcourt, lady- in- waiting at the courts of France and Burgundy .

Abandoned on the orders of Charles V , the castle was looted and set on fire in 1554 by the troops of the French King Henry II .
